Good afternoon everyone

Both spice cabinets are finally done and I'll be listing them within the hour.

It's nearly the end of April and snow is predicted tonight.

I took some photos of the veneer I bought yesterday, so here they are. I hope someone can identify the wood. Two of them have the same curly style grain but they're really different in color.

I don't know it, but I'll ask my husband. He's probably heard of them. My husband's an IT manager for a company called Life Technologies. But, he's in Shanghai right now. Comes home tomorrow. As for the warm and sunny, that's pretty typical for So Cal. We get rain, but not often. Although, there's a winter storm in forcast for this week. Hope you're feeling better.

Renee - it is an IT company. They do all the e-mail filtering and that security side of thing.

Thanks. I get tension headaches occasionally but seem to be ok today.

Hope you've recovered after your op.

Linda, I don't recognise any of them but the first and third are a type of Burr where they've cut through one of those big fungus (Burrs) that can grow on the side of trees. They slice through it and you get all those little knots and curly grain. It's difficult to finish though - I was told it needs to be french polished to bring out the best in a burr but others may know more.

If no-one knows on here if you let me have the photos I can ask on the woodworking forum I'm on as there's loads of experts on veneers on there.

I had another sale today - PPF dropped by looking much perkier than yesterday. A return customer from last week - she liked them so much she came back :)

More congratulations are in order.

I love burr patterns, my other thought was could it be a form of walnut?

Whatever they are I think they are very beautiful. I'm old enough to remember when marketry was all the rage and some fabulous pictures were produced by some local craft workers and exhibited at our shows. I love wood - maybe I inherited that from my Father.

The second and third pics could be walnut.
I wondered if the last pic might be some type of lacewood.

I also love wood and I know that for me it's definitely inherited from my Dad. I made him a box for his 60th last year (with help from a box maker) as I knew it was the perfect gift. Wood is so stunningly beautiful I love how you can take a rough piece that looks like nothing special and turn it into a thing of beauty with a bit of care. I just wish my skills were up to creating more complicated pieces. Sadly they don't teach you basic skills like making joints at school any more.
Thanks BK. It's the most consistent sales I've ever had and it's nice when people are so pleased that they come back for more. I hope it continues as I really want this to work out!

@ Linda ... The first 3 are Praline Burl veneers, the fourth is Maple Birdseye, and the last is Australian Lacewood. All of them look beautiful. Can't wait to see what you do with them. Hope that helps.

@ Bluekitty ... Thanks for clearing that up for me :) Oh, and I registered for the club house last week, but haven't received an email back. I used my full name instead of my store name -- not sure if that matters. Should I re-register?

Good evening all!

It's been a while, and I am so far behind!

My "intense lateral epicondylitis" (The Dr.'s term) is taking forever to heal, and it may not for a long time. I have been using a sling for 2 weeks, and have to go see a specialist next week. I have been bored out of my mind.....have read 3 books, walked around and had a good many ideas. I'm grounded from the piano still. (Alina and the kids are probably more than likely silently thankful). I tried to make a table this week end, and it made the elbow sore, but not too bad.

Anyway, just touching base, and letting this great group know I'm slowly healing, and I miss posting regularly. I really appreciate all the well wishes and thoughts, and I hope all the new comers and oldtimers alike are getting visits from the PPF, and are being productive! I hope to be able to type faster, so I'll try to keep up for a change.

Take care all. That's all I can do for now. Have a good one, and I'll see ya soon!

Good morning everyone

Matt - Thank you ever so much for the info on my veneers. I can label them now. I have no idea yet what I'll end up doing with them. For now I'm just leaving them out in plain sight to admire. :D

Ray, I sure hope you feel better soon.

The smaller of my two spice cabinets sold within 15 minutes (it was a custom order and the buyer was online when I listed it.)Yay!

I wrote quite a longish message this morning then the site went down when I tried to post it.

Good morning (afternoon now)

Heal quickly Ray - we miss you.

I will go and check the Club House waiting room and open the cat flap. I have to sign in to the Admin area and don't check unless I know someone is waiting. Sorry

We didn't do carpentry at school (not something for girls in those days) and my Dad was of the old school - men did some jobs and women did others. A few years ago he went quite white when i expressed a desire to learn to use his power tools to build a scratch built dolls house. His reply was along the lines of them not being toys. The saddest thing is that I now own those tools and have not been trained properly to use them. I have a power saw in the summerhouse which I'm not sure I will ever use as I worry about losing my paws. :)

That's a shame. We didn't do what I would call 'woodwork' either. Design and technology it was called so did a lot of making things with vacuum forming and printed circuit boards and the like but not the backbone of skills that I would have liked to have learnt.

My Dad wasn't that knowledgable about more complicated joints either so he couldn't teach me.

What power saw have you got? I use my bandsaw a lot and that's generally the safest tool to use as long as you don't stick you fingers in the blade! Not the same risks as there can be with a table saw.

Ray - hope you're feeling better soon.

Good morning, everyone.

Ray, I hope your injury heals quickly. If the doc prescribed Physical Therapy, I'd highly recommend it. A good physical therapist can really speed the healing and help ensure you have full range of motion afterwards.

I've been organizing my workspace making some small improvements. Installed a baby gate that swings open just like a real gate. It'll keep the puppy out of my workspace without having to close the solid door. :)

Woodworking, or Shop, as it was called, was flatly forbidden for girls when I was in high school. I never did understand their reasoning. You needed two hands, eyes, and a brain. The boys had that, and so did the girls. WTF?

Good morning

Its pouring with rain and cold here. No need to be worrying about not being allowed to use a hosepipe to water the garden during our drought. More worried about flooding and glad I live on high ground.

Only this country could declare a drought when it rains all the time. Only this country can grind to a halt when there is half an inch of snow.

It's the same here but it's also really windy too.

Don't forget though that we had an unusually dry winter and a heatwave in March and that's why there's a 'drought'. We need this rain really.
